2025-26 PA Day Learning

Throughout the upcoming school year, we will be sharing more informationabout how ˿Ƶ staff are learning and working together on Professional Activity (PA) Days to support students’ success.

October 24, 2025 Professional Activity Day

Topic 1a: WHMIS

Length: 1/6Day

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters: ˿ƵDSB Human Resources

Description:

This mandatory training helps protect workers from harm by ensuring they can identify hazardous products, understand safety data sheets and labels, and follow safe handling and storage procedures.

Topic 1b: Cyber Security

Length: 1/6 Day

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters: ˿ƵDSB Information & Communications Technology staff

Description:

School staff will participate in a mandatory cybersecurity awareness training module designed to educate employees on current cyber threats and emerging threats.

Topic 2: School Improvement Planning ( Secondary)

Length: 1⁄3 Day

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters: ˿ƵDSB School Administrators

Description:

School teams will engage in school improvement planning, in support of inclusive learning/work environments and building on previous PA Day and staff meeting work/learning.

Topic 2: Self-Directed ( Elementary)

Length: 2⁄3 Day

Description:

All permanent elementary teachers will have 200 minutes of preparation time, as directed by the Ministry of Education.

Topic 3: School Directed Time (Secondary)

Length: 1⁄3 Day

Description:

School staff will review the new ˿Ƶ Homework Guidelines and further their learning in the areas of supporting student learning and development.

Topic 1: Safe & Caring Schools and Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Length: 200 minutes

  • School staff will explore the Ministry mandated topics of ‘Keeping Schools Safe’ and ‘Creating Supportive Classrooms Free of Discrimination’

Topic 2: School Directed Time

Length: 100 minutes

Description:
  • School improvement planning, LLS programming and NCVI or SNAP training for those registered.

Topic 1: Health and Safety

Length: 180 minutes

  • School staff will complete the online Workplace ViolenceAwareness/Health and Safety module Health & SafetyCompliance Training 2025-26 and then meet collectively to discuss.

Topic 2: RISE Online Module

Length: 60 minutes

Description:
  • RISE is ˿Ƶ’s new Student Services Software platform. The online training module covers essential learning for: Navigating RISE, Student Overview, IEPs, and Safety Plans.

2024-25 PA Day Learning

The June 27 PA Day (elementary and secondary) will focus on:

  • School Improvement Planning – Reflections, and
  • School Directed, Year-End Tasks.

The June 9 Professional Activity Day is for elementary schools only and will be used for assessment and evaluation.

Topic 1: Artificial Intelligence

Length: ¼ Day

Description:

Elementary: This professional learning introduces elementary educators to Artificial Intelligence (AI) addressing foundational concepts, its significance in education, and ethical considerations.

Secondary: This professional learning focuses on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. It highlights the importance of AI literacy, strategies to make assessments AI-proof, and ways to integrate AI into classroom activities to enhance learning and creativity.

Topic 2a: Literacy

Length: ¼ Day

Description:

Elementary (K-Gr. 3): This professional learning opportunityis designed to provide Kindergarten to Grade 3 educators with time to collaborate with grade partners about intentional planning, assessment and instruction in Literacy. The learning is designed to refine, deepen and extend educators’ application and integration of expectations in the Ontario Language Curriculum and/or The Kindergarten Program.

Secondary: Educators will extend their learning from the September 2024 Professional Activity Day. It includes opportunities for educators to reflect on current practices, share their experiences, and collaboratively plan next steps to support literacy and strengthen the reading rope for all students.

Topic 2b: Code of Conduct - Vaping (Elementary (Gr. 4-8))

Length: ¼ Day

Description:

This professional learning is designed to provide grades 4-8 educators an opportunity to learn more about vaping and electronic cigarettes as it relates to the new Code of Conduct – Interim Guidelines.

Topic 3: School Improvement Planning

Length: ½ Day

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters: ˿ƵDSB School Administrators

Description:

School teams will engage in school improvement planning (SIP). Schools will be focusing on the Observe stage of the SIP process, answering the question: is what we are doing making a difference?

Additional school directed learning/planning may also occur.

The January 31 Professional Activity Day is for assessment and evaluation (elementary schools) and semester change activities (secondary schools).

Topic 1: Artificial Intelligence

Description:

Key professional learning topics include: guiding principles, overview, assessment and evaluation, ethics and equity, privacy and security, and tools.

Topic 2: Curriculum Implementation

Length: 2/3 Day

Description:

Opportunities for cross-school and subject-alike sharing/learning in support of Ministry of Education curriculum implementation. Key professional learning may include one or more of the following topics: creating classroom culture that supports learning, addressing gaps in learning, supporting students with IEPs, integrating equity and CRRP, connecting learning to the world, health and safety, destreaming, curriculum review (new/revised), assessment and evaluation, and background knowledge and vocabulary.

Topic 1: Mental Health in Elementary and Secondary Schools

Description:

School staff will explore social emotional learning.

Topic 2a: Math (Numeracy) in Elementary Schools

Description:

School teams will further their learning in the areas of social emotional learning, composing/decomposing numbers, and assessment for learning.

Topic 2b: Secondary School Assessment and Evaluation

Description:

School staff will further their learning in the areas of culturally relevant and responsive assessment and evaluation, review ˿Ƶ exam/culminating task guidelines, and further explore social emotional learning.

Topic 3: Secondary Code of Conduct

Description:

School teams will engage in school improvement planning.

Topic 1a: Elementary Literacy

Description:

School staff will explore strand integration with the Language (2023) curriculum and using ongoing Assessment for Learning to inform instruction.

Topic 1b: Secondary Literacy

Description:

This literacy learning emphasizes the importance of literacy across all subject areas in secondary education. Educators will gain strategies to explicitly teach reading skills and incorporate literacy techniques into all subjects.

Topic 2a: Elementary Math

Description:

School teams will learn about building effective conditions in the math classrooms to support social emotional learning and using ongoing Assessment for Learning to inform instruction.

Topic 2b: Secondary Code of Conduct

Length: ¼ Day

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters: ˿ƵDSB Safe & Caring Schools Department and ˿ƵDSB School Administrators

Description:

School staff will be reviewing the implementation of the revised Code of Conduct with a specific focus on the new cell phone guidelines and electronic cigarette awareness. Staff will collaborate in learning related to social media and cell phones, and will engage with resources addressing the dangers of vaping and vaping cessation. Feedback on the implementation process will also be collected from schools.

Topic 3: School Improvement Planning

Length: ½ Day

Description:

School teams will engage in improvement planning, with a focus on Board Action Plan system action SA-EL1: provide evidence-based instruction in literacy and math, informed by ongoing assessment, to tailor differentiated and intensive supports for student success.

The April 8 Professional Activity (PA) Day will focus on the following areas:

Topic 1: School Improvement Planning - Monitoring

Description:

This session will provide school teams:

  • With an opportunity to review the key stages of school improvement planning, with a focus on monitoring.
  • School teams will update their school improvement plans to reflect educator observations.

Topic 2: Mental Health:Trauma Informed Education - Belonging

Presenters/Facilitators: ˿ƵDSB Mental Health Staff

This session will explore the following:

  • How trauma informed education is connected to Mentally Healthy School Communities.
  • Exploration of the 5 pillars of trauma informed education.
  • Benefits of trauma informed education.

The February 2 Professional Activity Day is for assessment and evaluation (elementary schools) and semester change activities (secondary schools).

The November 24th Professional Activity (PA) Day for Secondary Schools Only focused on the following areas:

Topic 1:Identity Affirming Resource Selection

Description:
  • Support educators with identify affirming resource selection.
  • Explore various tools/resources to support culturally relevant and responsive practices.

Topic 2b: School Improvement Planning

Description:
  • Refine learning and build shared understanding of the Language (2023) curriculum, namely strand B, Foundations of Language.
  • Staff will focus on one of two pathways:
    • Phonics, WordReadingand Spelling
    • Using Morphology to Strengthen Reading Comprehension

November 3Topic1b(Elementary Schools, Gr. 7/8 Staff):Mental Health Literacy

  • Educator orientation to the Mental Health Literacy Modules for Grades 7 and 8.

September 29 Topic 1: Student Safety and Well-Being

Length: 1/4 Day

Description:
  • Review the ˿ƵDSB Anti-Sex Trafficking administrative regulation and applicable resources.
  • Explore cyber security and online privacy awareness through various ˿ƵDSB and partner resources (e.g., ˿ƵDSB Instructional Technology Plan, OPHEA Internet Safety Resources, Cyber Security Ontario).

September 29 Topic 2a (Elementary Schools): Literacy

Length: 1/2 Day

Presenters/Facilitators:˿ƵDSB Teaching & Learning Department

Description:
  • Elementary schools will be engaging in learning about the new language curriculum through the lens of knowing our learners, considering the curriculum as continuum, and text selection. This learning will be done from a literacy perspective while intentionally considering culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy (CRRP) and Indigenous Education explicitly in this work.

September 29 Topic 2b (Secondary Schools): Curriculum Implementation

Length: 1/2 Day

Presenters/Facilitators: ˿ƵDSB School Administrators(supported by the Teaching & Learning department).

Description:
  • With a focus on the new de-streamed Grade 9 English curriculum, this professional learning will help build literacy skills across all curricular areas/grades.
  • Secondary educators will collaborate in school teams to review ˿ƵDSB’s Assessment and Evaluation Policy and Administrative Regulation to support student success across all subject areas.

September 29 Topic 3: School Improvement Planning

Length: 1/4 Day

Presenters/Facilitators: ˿ƵDSBAdministrators

Description:
  • School staff will analyze various types of student data (e.g., perceptual, demographic, achievement) in support of their school improvement efforts.
  • Through this analysis, schools will collectively identify one are of focus (from the ˿ƵDSB Board Action Plan) for their school improvement plans.

Staff at elementary and secondary schools engaged in a full day of learning during the August 31 PA Day.Among the areas of learning for staff on this day were:School Improvement Planning, Workplace Violence Awareness, Curriculum Implementation and Mental Health.

Description:
  • Schools will explore various types of data that will support school improvement planning.
  • School staff will review the ˿ƵDSB Board Action Plan and applicable resources. Through this review, schools will begin the process of establishing school improvement goals

Topic 2: Workplace Violence Awareness

Length: 1/2 Day

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters/Facilitators: ˿ƵDSB School Administrators & Staff (Safe and Caring Schools, Special Education, Human Resources)

Description:
  • Schools will review emergency response planning, incident reporting, and notification of risk.
  • School teams will engage in professional learning that focuses on understanding behaviour and its risks.

Topic 3a (Secondary Schools): Curriculum Implementation

Length: 1/4 Day (with topic 4)

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Description:
  • School staff will review new/revised curriculum: Gr. 9 English (De-Streamed) and Gr. 10 Computer Studies. In doing so, and with the Gr. 9 English curriculum, staff will explore literacy connections across the curriculum.
  • Through this review, staff will reexamine a culturally relevant and responsive approach to instruction and assessment with a focus on knowing our learners.

Topic 3b (Elementary Schools): Curriculum Implementation & Mental Health

Length: 1/4 Day

Description:
  • School staff will review the revised Gr. 1-8 Language curriculum. In doing so staff will reflect on the structure, content and intent of the curriculum for the purpose of effective planning, assessment and instruction. Schools will also make explicit connections between the new curriculum and ˿ƵDSB literacy resources.
  • Through this review, staff will reexamine a culturally relevant and responsive approach to instruction and assessment with a focus on knowing our learners.
  • School Mental Health Ontario resources such as the Reflection Tool for Educators will be shared to help support mentally healthy identity affirming classrooms.

Topic 4 (Secondary Schools): Mental Health

Length: 1/4 Day (with topic 3a)

Host: ˿Ƶ District School Board

Presenters/Facilitators: ˿ƵDSB Staff (Mental Health)

Description:
  • School staff will explore mental health literacy. This learning will be supported through mental health literacy lessons and resources that have been developed bySchool Mental Health Ontario.
  • Schools will also develop mental health literacy implementation plans that will focus on the teaching of social and emotional skills and mental health literacy using culturally relevant and responsive approaches.
